Scott Nichols Gallery closes the summer with a show of original works by legendary landscape photographer Ansel Adams.
Visionary photographer Ansel Adams was born in San Francisco in 1902, four years before the great earthquake of 1906. His epic career as America’s beloved and respected landscape photographer spanned more than six decades and his iconic photographs have been published and exhibited worldwide, commanding astounding prices.
Having disliked the constraints of the classroom as a child, Adams left school aged 13 and soon developed a deep love for his local natural environment. A family trip to Yosemite in 1916 cemented this love and ignited his passion to preserve the great American wilderness. This profound appreciation for nature became his primary photographic inspiration and in 1927, having photographed Half Dome he first found that he could make photographs that were, in his words: “...an austere and blazing poetry of the real”.
The exhibition will feature photographs spanning every decade of Ansel Adams’ career, beginning with early vintage work from the 1920s and ending with his photographs of Yosemite from the 50’s and 60s. Scott Nichols has specialized in the work of Ansel Adams for almost 20 years and the gallery maintains a large inventory of Adams’ work.
