Celebrating Jack London

Jack London

January 12, 1876 – November 22, 1916

ARNOLD GENTHE
Jack London. c. 1900
10″ x 8″ Gelatin silver print

John Griffith Chaney, commonly known as Jack London, was an American novelist, journalist, social activist, and longtime resident of the San Francisco Bay Area.

He is best known as the author of The Call of the Wild, first published serially by the Saturday Evening Post, June 20–July 18, 1903. He sold the rights to publish for $750. Today, that would have been roughly $25,000. Soon after, London sold complete rights to The Call of the Wild to Macmillan. They printed a first edition of 10,000 copies, selling at a price of $1.50, equivalent to a contemporary $50. They sold out immediately. The book has never been out of print.

Late in his life, London purchased a 1,000-acre ranch in Glen Ellen, on the eastern slope of Sonoma Mountain, which he dubbed Beauty Ranch. He invested in the construction of a home called Wolf House on the property, built by Italian and Chinese stonemasons in their respective styles. Two weeks before completion, the constructed home was destroyed by fire. The ranch and stone remnants of Wolf House are now a National Historic Landmark, protected within the bounds of Jack London State Historic Park.

Arnold Genthe was best known for his photographs of San Francisco Chinatown, the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, and his portraits of notable celebrities of the era, including his friend, Jack London.

A photograph by Ruth Bernhard

RUTH BERNHARD
Hand in Hand. 1956, printed 1976 by Ruth Bernhard
9 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ Gelatin silver print on Agfa Portriga Rapid
Edition of 15; this print is the original artist’s proof
Signed, titled, and numbered

This image was captured by Ruth Bernhard shortly after she moved to San Francisco. Bernhard teamed up with Melvin Van Peebles, a then 25-year-old cable car gripman, as he wrote his first book. Their collaboration resulted in the photo essay The Big Heart, a love letter to San Francisco’s cable cars and the people who ride them.

Over the course of his career, Melvin Van Peebles was an author, actor, filmmaker, writer, and composer. When he and Ruth Bernhard first met, he had a B.A. in literature and had recently finished serving a term with U.S. Air Force. According to the author, it was a cable car passenger who suggested that he should become a filmmaker.

Melvin Van Peebles passed away in September 2021.

This original photograph, one of the last ever to be printed by Ruth Bernhard comes from her personal copy of The Gift of the Commonplace portfolio.

The same pair of hands is also featured in:

Horace Bristol: PBY Blister Gunner, Rescue at Rabaul

Horace Bristol: PBY Blister Gunner, Rescue at Rabaul

PBY Blister Gunner, Rescue at Rabaul, 1944
10 1/4″ x 10″ Signed platinum print

Horace Bristol was part of a small group of acclaimed photographers who were chosen by Edward Steichen to photograph different war theaters during World War II. At the time, Steichen was Director of the Naval Aviation Photographic Unit.

While in the South Pacific, Bristol was on this PBY, a flying boat and amphibious aircraft that was produced in the 1930s and 1940s.

During assignment, he encountered a pilot who had been shot down 24 hours earlier. The pilot’s hands were burnt, but he was able to pop out into a small raft, doing what he could to survive until possible rescue.

The raft floated out into the ocean and the PBY was looking for him, later locating this young pilot. Once the PBY found him, the gunner pictured had stripped his clothing off and swam out to his raft, then tying it to the PBY craft, helping the injured pilot to safety.

On his return to the PBY, Japanese forces arrived and it was all hands on deck. The rescue mission was under attack. The photograph PBY Blister Gunner, Rescue at Rabaul shows the gunner manning his station, immediately following rescue of the injured pilot.
